About the Role

The Senior Product Designer thrives on taming complex problems into straightforward user experiences. Youíll make it simple to transform manual lab workflows into powerful, automated protocols so biologists can spend less time wrangling automation and more time on world-changing research.

In this role youíll reinvent how biologists discover, share and implement protocols to unlock bio-innovation. You will partner closely with Product and Engineering leads to conduct user research and work on projects to improve the Opentrons Community. 

Here are examples of recent design projects to get a sense of the day-to-day:

  • Overhauling the IA and UI of the Opentrons App

  • Designing how users set up their liquids to run protocols in the Opentrons App

  • Designing a workflow for users to edit multiple protocol steps at once 

  • Redesigning how users browse Opentrons Protocol Library

Opentrons Design uses Figma, Jira, Confluence and GSuite as our primary tools.


  • Define and solve problems by conducting user research, creating workflows and wireframes, gaining alignment with stakeholders, and collaborating with engineers to ensure your approaches are buildable

  • Build confidence among stakeholders by backing up your design rationale with user data, competitor studies, and UX field literature

  • Create scalable processes for the design team

  • Provide design feedback and mentorship to peers and junior team members


  • Solid history of shipping work at startups for SaaS products

  • Expert in utilizing digital design best practices to define problems and create user flows, wireframes, prototypes and high fidelity designs

  • Skilled storyteller and communicator: you know how to frame a discussion thatís perfectly tailored to your audience

  • Proven experience mentoring junior designers

  • At ease with complex and highly technical concepts

Please include a link to your portfolio with at least one in-depth case study that showcases a project you led from idea to launch.
