About the Role

Reporting to the GM, this individual will have technical oversight of all laboratories within the Pandemic Response Lab (PRL), which currently include PRL-NYC, PRL-DC, and PRL-OC. S/he will be a valuable and insightful member of the PRL Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and will help guide the company forward as it progresses its growth across service lines and geographies as well as expanding product offerings. 

The VP is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory including quality and regulatory compliance, personnel, line management, and complex strategic planning.

The VP will be team-oriented and progress both short- and long-term initiatives to assist the GM and partner with the SLT in executing on strategy and in continuing to build the business. S/he will possess strong communication skills in order to gain credibility with internal and external stakeholders.


Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborates with the GM and SLT to develop long-term strategy of diagnostic business unit in partnership with rest of Opentrons executive leadership 

  • Assist with establishing budget and goals for technical operations

  • Manage the leaders across all laboratories and their respective teams

  • Hold laboratory leadership accountable to deliver against their budgets, KPIs, and goals 

  • Ensure effective process and collaborations BU-wide across product development and technical strategy

  • Responsible for strategic planning, organizational development, and operations, directing the work of management, and staff

  • Responsible for maintaining laboratory regulatory compliance with CLIA, CAP, and NYS DOH

  • Work with management and PRL Leadership to foster operational efficiency

  • Oversee all laboratory managers including conducting on-going performance and competency evaluations for the managers 

  • Responsible for monitoring the laboratory for effective workflow

  • Work with the medical laboratory director and quality systems director to continuously upgrade and implement a quality management and improvement system

  • Consult with IT/LIS to assure that the system supports clinical needs and/or work on long-term IT/LIS improvement projects

  • Continuously assess client needs through solicited feedback to ensure system and process outcomes exceed expectations

  • Oversee the educational and administrative activities of the laboratory

  • Implement systems to assure timely communication flow across service lines, operational areas and cross-functional teams

  • Ensure that testing systems developed and used for each of the tests performed in the laboratory provide quality laboratory services for all aspects of test performance

  • Ensure test results are returned within the timeframes established by the proficiency testing program

  • Review and approve corrective action plan required when any proficiency testing result is found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory

  • Conduct performance and competency evaluations for Lab Managers on a timely basis

  • Introduce new procedures and instrumentation for approval. Writes accurate policies. Trains, inservices and documents management education as required

  • Monitor the recording and reporting of patient test results and make amendments in LIS as needed

  • Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications 

  • Review problems that may arise including  non-conformances from laboratory management

  • Handle required disciplinary matters in a fairly consistent manner. Maintains open communication with laboratory management and HR Department

  • Interview and recommends hiring to laboratory management for current lab and other labs as needed

  • Promote good working relationships amongst laboratory staff through meetings and personal interaction

  • Other duties as delegated by General Manager

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of appropriate clinical laboratory management experience, specifically including the disciplines of molecular pathology and immunology

  • Two years of appropriate experience with next-generation sequencing technologies for clinical use

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, with specialization in molecular biology or biochemistry preferred

  • Demonstrated expertise in laboratory test system validation procedures

  • Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization

  • 7-10 years of previous supervisory experience required
